BA Course, 5th Semester, 2007-2010
Lecturer: Daniel Hug
Increasingly, everyday artifacts are enhanced by or even defined through computational technologies. The fact that they disappear in our environment or even our clothes and bodies, and that we used them rather peripherally as we go about our daily business, opens up exciting new possibilities for sound design.
This course deals with strategies, tools and techniques to design sounds for everyday interactive artifacts. In particular we look at ways to integrate sound into the interaction design process from the very beginning, using improvisational low-tech methods and wizard-of-oz experience prototyping. At the center of attention are how we can tell a "story" through sound, and how sound can become part of performing our identity in everyday life. Also we will practice the structured evaluation and informed critique of sound design proposals, looking at issues of usability, aesthetics and culture.
