Bachelor of Arts in Design

The three year BA program provides students with aesthetic, social and technological knowledge needed to create interactive experiences. In collaboration with industry and research, students create and develop innovative and sustainable interfaces, systems and services.

Share

BA program is structured around design explorations, theoretical discourse and technology development that support creation of innovative products and services, such as social media platforms, gestural interfaces, mobile applications, wearable devices, web media etc.

  • akusTisch | Bachelor 2009
  • Retype | Bachelor 2008

In the first year of the program, the basics of design, theory and technology are taught. Design basics include courses in graphics, product and sound design. Theory courses are focused on human-centered methods such as participatory design, as well as innovative strategies such as future scenarios and video prototyping. Basics of software and hardware thought in technology courses help students to creatively explore interactive medium.

During the second and the third year of the program, Studio Courses combine these different competences in project conceptualization and development. Studio projects are developed in collaboration with companies such as Daimler, Volkswagen and Sony, where students can experience designing under strict requirements of client. Other Studio Courses are developed within research projects conducted at IAD, such as sonic interaction design. These allow student to experiment with novel interactive experiences and to creatively express their own visions of the future.

The final goal of the BA education is to form inspiring interaction designers who have a sense of responsibility toward societal and individual needs. Our alumni work as interaction designers, service and experience designers, information architects and researchers across Europe, USA and Canada.

The BA curriculum is structured around design practice, critical theory and interactive technology.

In design area, the goal of the first year is to learn design basics, to practically explore different media feedbacks and  to conduct experiments into interaction aesthetics and to understand users and their experiences. Design Studios in second and third year combine knowledge from theory and technology with design stages of user and context inquiry, ideation,  prototype development, evaluation and iteration. Theoretical courses are focused on understanding media in everyday life and consequently the social impact of designer's work. In addition to theoretical frameworks and paradigms, the core of this area is teaching people-centered methods and participatory design. Technology courses provide students with programming knowledge, electronics and physical computing practice, as well as  tools such as video prototyping or 3d modeling and animation.

1. Semester: Basics

Graphic Design Basics

The explorations in two-dimensional space include the sign design and typography.

Product Design Basics

Working with simple materials such as foam and paper, students learn to experiment with three-dimensional form. The design of temporal aspects is introduced in sound design course.

http://iad.zhdk.ch/de/courses/object-experience

Basics of Technology

Coding Space course introduces the basics of programming in open-source Processing software. This course is combined with the graphic design basics course.
3D basis is a course with creative exercises in 3d modeling software which set up the basis for later courses in computer vision.

Basics of Interactivity

This course introduces different approaches to interaction design, from traditional HCI prospective, to enthographically-inspired user-centered design, system thinking approach to societal issues and provocative strategies such as critical design.

2. Semester: User-Centered Design

Interaction Design Process

In this module students learn about ways of developing their projects based on methods and practices that are at the core of interaction design. Students learn how to observe and analyze existing behaviors, and how to ground their design idea in findings from contextual and user research. They use video prototyping to represent the interactive experience.

Video Prototyping

Video prototyping is introduced as a tool for representing and evaluating design concepts. Students receive basic skills in narrative creation, camera work, editing, lighting and sound.

Web User Interface

Students apply human-centered methods to screen-based interaction design. They develop prototypes using HMTL, CSS, and Javascript.

Basics of GUI

Design and technological basics of web interface elements are taught. During this course, students acquire knowledge of ActionScript.

Theory II : User-Centered Methods

This course is focused on analysis of situated and user-centered methods such as bodystorming, context inquiry, video scenarios, participatory design etc.

3. Semester: Aesthetic Explorations

Design Studio I : Graphical User Interfaces

Interactive Visualization course explores the graphical and animated response to mouse or multitouch interaction.

http://blogs.iad.zhdk.ch/plakatsammlung/

Design Studio II: Tangible User Interfaces

This studio introduces light and movement as interactive mediums and engages students in a number of aesthetic experiments with haptic and light feedback. Studio courses require new knowledge in electronics and physical computing which is the center of third semester's technology program.

Design Studio III: Sonic Interaction Design

Projects dealing with sonic interaction are developed and sound design tools and technology introduced.

Theory III : Embodied Interaction Design

Sonic and tangible interaction paradigms are discussed and projects analyzed in this seminar.

4. Semester: Spaces and Services

Design Studio IV : Public Screens and Computer Vision

In this course, students develop projects that engage social interaction within public locations. Basics of computer vision processing using simple cameras as sensing devices that track movement and environmental changes are taught.

http://blogs.iad.zhdk.ch/computer-vision-2011/

Design Studio V : Service Design

In Service Design studio students are deal with the complexities of developing a multifaceted project in which interfaces, screens, and objects are connected through a service such as car sharing or social networking
